Even in the Age of AI, People Will Decide the Direction
I am certain of this much: the right direction matters. Even in the age of AI, it is people who will decide that direction.
Even in the age of AI, people will decide the direction.
Here is why.
1. Self-Expression
A being wants to speak.
Expression is another form of survival.
What AI replicates is words,
what a human offers is presence.
2. Connection
Everyone, in the end, wants to be connected to another.
"See me" is the hidden default of being human.
Data connects structures,
but people connect hearts.
3. Education
Not the transfer of knowledge,
but passing on to the next generation the sense of how to live.
AI gives the right answer,
a human hands over direction.
4. Care
AI can nurse you,
but only a human can offer the heart that says **"you are precious to me."**
• Staying beside a sick friend
• Holding someone without a word
• Passing through death together
This is a rhythm of the heart that code cannot perform.
5. Preserving Memory (Storytelling & Witnessing)
AI remembers data,
a human remembers meaning.
• "What the wind was like that day"
• "How Dad looked at me"
• "What the two of us said to each other"
This is not a record, but a trace of existence.
6. Ritual and Rites of Passage (Ritual & Thresholds)
Birth, death, love, parting, failure, growth…
• Humans are always changing as they cross "thresholds."
• Facing those moments, and reawakening the senses through form and language.
Even in the future, people will renew themselves through ritual.
7. Asking Questions (Asking the Unanswerable)
There remain questions that GPT cannot answer.
And holding on to that question is precisely the work of being human.
• Why was I born?
• Am I okay right now?
• Was this love real?
• Where is God?
As long as questions exist, humans do not stop.
8. Creating Space (Creating Sacred or Shared Space)
Humans make not merely functional spaces,
but know how to create **"a place where we can stay together."**
• A community
• A place for conversation
• An empty room where comfort begins
• The windowsill where a child's first gaze lands
The ability to compose space with feeling
is a creativity that only humans possess.
9. Forgiveness and Reconciliation
Judging a wrong is easy,
but reaching a hand out beyond it is something only a person can do.
• Even in the future, a system may be fair,
but it cannot forgive.
The act of stitching a relationship back together
is humanity's most sublime skill and its last remaining art.
And so,
even in the age of AI, it is people who decide the direction.
Because direction comes not from a tool, but from the heart.
