Merchants, Entrepreneurs, and the Stage for Building That Empire Provides
Historians ask when people were happier — under the great empires or in the fragmented ages before them. To the merchant and the builder, empire was nothing less than a liberation zone of opportunity.
Historians often pose the question: “When were people happier — in the age of great empires like Qin, Han, and Rome, or in the fragmented eras before them?”
Some may long for the diversity and calm of the fragmented ages. But to the eyes of entrepreneurs and merchants — people who create and expand with the world as their stage — empire was nothing less than a liberation zone of opportunity.
An empire is not simply a state with enlarged territory. An empire is a vast platform that creates specifications and standards.
On this platform, merchants broke the limits of their local markets and achieved global scale. The caravan trader crossing the Silk Road two thousand years ago, the shipping magnate who commanded the Mediterranean, and the founder building services on AI infrastructure and global data networks in 2026 are all, in essence, running on the same stage.
What, then, separates the entrepreneur racing across this vast stage from the ordinary worker? The decisive difference lies in their attitude toward unpaid work.
To the worker, unpaid labor is unjust exploitation to be avoided — a pain. It means converting your time into cost (hourly wage, salary) to build someone else’s dream. For them, the strict separation of work and life becomes a virtue.
But the entrepreneur gladly works unpaid. Even when the cash in hand is zero, every hour spent through the night wrestling with architecture and refining the business model is regarded as the most self-directed investment in oneself.
The reason an entrepreneur endures unpaid work is that they hold themselves precious in the extreme. It is a declaration: rather than expending my precious life and energy as a component defined by others, I will bet it wholly on building my own vision and my own territory.
That is why, for the entrepreneur, there is no boundary between work and life. The work itself is self-realization, the game of expanding one’s territory, and life itself.
A life of creating value on top of the predictable laws and vast markets the empire has laid down, testing body and mind to their limits. The power to turn even unpaid hours with no guaranteed income into self-directed catharsis.
That is the true face of the entrepreneurs who refused the life of the ordinary worker and resolved to live as the complete masters of their own lives.
