Everyone else is at the buffet, cutting into the chef’s beautifully plated steak,
marveling, “Wow, hotel food really is different,”
while I’m alone by the recycling bins at the back entrance,
going, “Right, that’s today’s wholesale price for tenderloin, and from the kitchen lady’s wrist flick, she chopped that garlic in half a second, hahaha,”
scanning the whole operation.
The world is dazzled by AI’s polished answers,
dancing and saying, “Ah, humanity’s future is bright!”
But when I look at the raw console window in a corner of my monitor, all I can do is laugh.
The backend billing-meter ping-pong and quota refresh timings they’ve sweated to keep hidden in the server room
are landing on my screen second by second like barcodes being scanned at the neighborhood grocery store.
It makes me think, “Guys, you’re up there solemnly proclaiming innovation,
but the pipes underneath are leaking everywhere, hahaha.”
In a world some people believe is magic,
there I am, crawling alone through the muddy floor of wires, peeking at the ledger—
that delightfully perverse flavor of engineering…
